Binaural Beats – What Are They & How Do They Work
If you believe that Binaural Beats are just another “new age” fad, then I’m sure this article will change your mind. Binaural Beats have been researched for almost 170 years. During each day your brain will reach various frequency cycles. The varying frequencies will have varying effects on your conscious state. It was discovered that different brainwave frequencies could be induced using external stimuli, this included flashing lights or sound waves. They found that the brain will alter the frequency of the brainwaves it produces to try and match or copy the frequency of the stimuli. For example our brain will normally produce brainwaves at 4 cycles per second when we are asleep. If we look at a light flashing at 4 times per second our brainwaves will begin to match that frequency which can have the effect of sending us to sleep.
Many of the most powerful brainwave frequencies used for altered states of consciousness and Meditation are under 20 Hz. As it is impossible to hear frequencies that low, Binaural Beats were developed, which is a technology that uses the inner workings of the brain to produce the desired frequencies.
This is how it works. Lets say you want to tune your brainwaves to a frequency of 7 Hz. If you play a sound of 200 Hz in one ear and 207 Hz in the other, your brain will compensate for the difference, this has the result of producing a third frequency inside your brain of exactly 7 Hz. It is this third tone that your brain will then try to copy and your brainwaves will be lowered to the desired 7 Hz.This is also known as brainwave entrainment.
Case Study.
In 1999, Thomas Budzynski Ph.D. published a case in the Journal of Neurotherapy which showed that a group of 8 college students increased their GPA (grade point average) with the use of audio brainwave stimulation, and their GPA continued to increase even after the brainwave entrainment was finished.
Monaural Beats & Isochronic Tones.
Since binaural beats first came about the technology has been developed & there are two new variations on the standard technology. With Monaural Beats two tones are used, but the tones merge together to form one tone before the sound reaches the brain, it is this single tone that pulses as a sign wave at the desired frequency. This is better because it doesn’t require the brain to do any of the work of combining the two tones together so the effects act more quickly. Also Monaural Beats can be used with ordinary speakers as it does not require two different tones to be played into each ear.
The latest form of brainwave entrainment is Isochronic Tones These are similar to Monaural Beats but with one subtle difference, rather than creating a sign wave, the sound itself pulses on and off. This allows the brain to become tuned to the frequency even more quickly and the effects are more pronounced. This technology is proving to give the most profound effects of any type of brainwave entrainment.
How to get the most out of your Binaural Beats recording.
For the best effects you must use earphones rather than speakers when listening to Binaural Beats. Earphones are not required when using Monaural Beats or Isochronic Tones. If your hearing is impaired in one ear then Monaural Beats or Isochronic Tones are the best choice. It is advised that you find a quiet place where you will not be disturbed as any interruption can bring you straight out of your desired state of consciousness. If you can relax and let your mind go blank then your recording will be far more effective Finally give it time, the effects are not instant and in most cases you will need to listen to the recording for at least 5 minutes, some minds may take longer, particularly if it is your first time using Binaural Beats.
